THE OTHER SIDE OF JUSTICE

After an incident that gets a media trial, social media buzzes with demands of strict action, immediate arrests, jail times. Obviously people want an offender to be punished for the crime. What our persistent call for justice loses sight of, is justice itself. When people want someone to be punished quickly and the issue gets politicised way out of proportion, chances of scapegoating increases. While social media may rejoice in arrest of a person, it seems unconcerned with whether or not that person actually did it or not. When that person gets bail, or he gets acquitted by the court, the same people raise their eyebrows at the courts. To free an innocent person from a false criminal charge is justice. The original crime may have remained unsolved but the eyes are fixated on the person released, and not to look for the actual culprit. That’s why the process demands patience. Let the authorities do their job first. If they fail, ask questions later.
